State medical license

Ohio physicians apply to the State Medical Board of Ohio through eLicense Ohio. Ohio is an IMLC member.

Ohio requires graduation from an accredited medical school, 24 months of postgraduate training (36 months for IMGs), USMLE/COMLEX passage, and One-Bite Rule completion (online).

Controlled-substance registration

Ohio does not require a separate state-level Controlled Substance Registration beyond the federal DEA registration (Ohio eliminated the State Terminal Distributor of Dangerous Drugs (TDDD) requirement for prescribing physicians several years ago — Verify). Ohio prescribers must use OARRS (Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System).

Medicaid enrollment

Agency: Ohio Department of Medicaid

Ohio Medicaid enrollment is administered by the Ohio Department of Medicaid through the Provider Network Management (PNM) module. Most beneficiaries are in Ohio Medicaid Managed Care.

  • Ohio Medicaid Managed Care credentialing through CVO (centralized credentialing)
  • Revalidation required every 5 years

Telehealth notes

Ohio permits telehealth broadly. Ohio license required to treat Ohio-located patients. Ohio Telehealth Rules (4731-37-01) require informed consent and apply standard-of-care rules to telehealth practice.

CME requirements

Ohio requires 100 CME hours per 2-year renewal cycle, with mandatory training in opioid prescribing for DEA registrants. Half must be Category 1 AMA PRA.

Prescribing opioids and other controlled substances (2 hours each renewal for prescribers)
